The Bathroom Glow-Up: Where Function Meets Personality (and a Little Drama)

Bathrooms are no longer just… bathrooms.
They’re little moments. Tiny sanctuaries. Mini hotel experiences in your own home. And if we’re doing it right? They should feel intentional, layered, and just a little bit unexpected.

If you’re renovating a bathroom, this is your permission slip to have fun with it.

Let’s get into it.

Step One: Think Beyond “Basic Bathroom”

Before we even talk tile or faucets—zoom out.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want this to feel like a spa? A boutique hotel? A moody powder room moment?

  • Do I want calm… or do I want wow?

Because your bathroom doesn’t need to match the rest of your house perfectly.
It can be its own little world.

Tile: Your Main Character Energy

Tile is where things get really fun.

Mix. Don’t match.

Please, I beg—stop using one tile everywhere.

Instead:

  • One tile for floors

  • One for shower walls

  • Maybe a contrast for a niche or accent. However, this is the one area I tend to stress, “keep it simple” and carry the wall tile into the niche with angles tile cuts for a seamless elevated look.

Think of it like layering an outfit. Grounded but accessorized!

Types to play with:

  • Zellige → imperfect, glossy, dreamy texture ( however, not ideal for tub/shower areas for those with little ones! The uneven edges can sometimes be sharp)

  • Porcelain → durable, low maintenance (great for floors)

  • Natural stone → elevated, timeless, slightly high-maintenance but worth it

  • Mosaic → perfect for adding detail without overwhelming

Pro tip:

Keep a common thread (color, tone, or texture) so it still feels cohesive.

Color: Yes, You Can Be Bold

Bathrooms are actually the best place to go bold.

Why?

  • Smaller space = less commitment

  • Big impact with less material

Try:

  • Deep greens, moody blues, warm clay tones

  • Soft blush with stone (chef’s kiss)

  • Black + ivory for contrast

Or go tonal and layer different shades of the same color.

Texture: The Secret Sauce

Flat and shiny everything = boring.

Mix textures like:

  • Matte tile + glossy tile

  • Smooth stone + fluted details

  • Plaster or roman clay walls + sleek fixtures

Texture is what makes a bathroom feel expensive and lived-in, not builder-grade.

Wallpaper in a Bathroom? Absolutely.

Say it with me:
We are not afraid of bathroom wallpaper.

Especially in:

  • Powder rooms

  • Areas outside the direct shower splash zone

It adds:

  • Pattern

  • Personality

  • That “where did you find this?” moment

Pair it with simple tile so it doesn’t compete.

The Toilet Area: Make It a Moment

Even the toilet deserves a vibe.

Create a little vignette:

  • A small pendant light (yes, over the toilet—trust me)

  • A piece of art

  • Maybe a tiny shelf or ledge

It turns a forgotten corner into something intentional and kind of chic.

Lighting: This Is Where Most People Mess Up

Let’s talk about it.

Overhead vanity lighting alone = harsh, unflattering, and slightly tragic.

What you actually want:

  • Sconces at eye level, on either side of the mirror

Why?

  • Even lighting across your face

  • No weird shadows

  • Much more elevated look

How to choose sconces:

  • Size them proportionally to your mirror

  • Think about warmth (2700K–3000K is your friend)

  • Don’t be afraid to go a little sculptural or funky

Overhead lighting can still exist—but it’s not the star.

Funky Mirrors = Instant Personality

Your mirror is jewelry.

Have fun with:

  • Organic shapes

  • Arched silhouettes

  • Vintage-inspired frames

  • Unexpected finishes

This is one of the easiest ways to make a bathroom feel custom.

Choosing Stone (and Not Regretting It)

Stone is stunning… but you need to know what you’re getting into.

Popular options:

  • Marble → classic, soft, will patina (embrace it)

  • Quartzite → more durable, similar look

  • Quartz (engineered) → low maintenance, consistent

What to consider:

  • Do you want perfection or character?

  • Are you okay with natural aging?

Care & cleaning:

  • Seal natural stone regularly

  • Avoid acidic cleaners (no vinegar!!)

  • Use gentle, pH-neutral cleaners

  • Wipe water quickly to prevent staining

Stone is like a linen dress—it’s not meant to be perfect, it’s meant to be beautiful.

Art: The Finishing Layer

Art is what ties everything together.

Look for pieces that:

  • Pull colors from your tile, wallpaper, or vanity

  • Add contrast or softness depending on the space

  • Feel a little unexpected

Bathrooms are a great place for:

  • Abstracts

  • Vintage prints

  • Even sculptural wall pieces

Trim & Ceiling: The Details That Make It

Don’t skip these.

Trim:

  • Contrast trim (think darker or richer tones) adds depth

  • Or go tone-on-tone for a softer, more modern feel

Ceiling:

Paint it.
Seriously.

  • Match the walls for a cocoon effect

  • Go slightly lighter for airiness

  • Or add wallpaper for full drama

The ceiling is the fifth wall—use it.

Final Thoughts

Your bathroom should feel like:

  • A little escape

  • A reflection of your style

  • A space you actually enjoy being in

So mix the tiles.
Hang the pendant.
Pick the funky mirror.
Use the wallpaper.

And most importantly—don’t play it safe.
